Rubbings

Painting Elephants: While studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design during the 1980’s my art making expanded in all directions. Histories filled in the past while the studios moved me forward. At one point while considering how to paint a three dimensional box on a two dimensional surface the ancient story of the “Blind Men and the Elephant” came to light. The organization and very physical movements of printing could help create a painting. By draping canvas over an object and then applying paint I could duplicate the blind man’s touch and render the objects without a preconception of the final image. All the sides were rendered one at time revealing the ancient tale through modern household objects. The resulting paintings and drawings; rubbings and rollings became the basis of the show Home and Garden held at Anna Leonowens Gallery. Welcome to my show. See what you see.
